Early Beginnings:  Colonial - 1850

Bethlehem's beginnings resemble those of many other Mid-Atlantic towns.  The land was originally occupied by native Americans, who practiced both agriculture and hunting.  During the eighteenth century, European settlers came over to America seeking religious freedom - those who settled at Bethlehem were Moravians from Germany.  These Moravians are responsible for chosing the name and location of Bethlehem, and also for many of the town's historic buildings and institutions.
