Remains of the Steel

    By the 1990ís, most of Bethlehem Steel was a memory and several acres of empty buildings.  In January of í94, the Steel closed all of its hot metal operations in Bethlehem, leaving only 4,500 employees.  By the end of another phase-out in 1996, 2000 more jobs were lost (xi-xii)  Only 20% of Bethlehem Steelís steel was made in Bethlehem in 1994 - the majority was produced in Burns Harbor, IN, and Sparrows Point, MD. (x)  No longer is the Steel an active part of Bethlehem life; yet its earlier influences still live on through golf courses, libraries, and houses.
